Medium Format Magazine Article
I'm honored to have my fine art photography featured in this month's issue of Medium Format Magazine, the "#1 publication dedicated to medium and large format photography."
Olaf Sztaba, the editor, writes, "With the autumn season upon us, Michael Hudson’s article, Intimate Beauty– Photographing Autumn Colour in Maine” couldn’t be timelier. Michael’s work focuses on colour and the richness of the Fall landscape but captures more subtle, intimate landscapes which are more difficult to photograph. He writes, “As an artist/ photographer, I don’t typically find a lot of satisfaction in wide vistas of the landscape, but I look for details and splashes of color in a more intimate landscape.” What a great read!"
Medium format refers to the type of camera I use to create my images. Unlike a typical Canon or Nikon camera, medium format sensors used to record images are usually much larger (about four times the size of my top-of-the-line Canon camera), meaning you’re able to record very fine details. The cameras are typically much bigger and heavier than a normal D-SLR, with big lenses to boot, but the quality of the final image is outstanding and worth the extra effort it takes to carry the equipment.
I’ve been using a Pentax 645Z medium format camera since 2014. The files from this camera are so good that I’m able to bring out so much detail in the shadows, as well as in the highlights, all in one image, rather than spending more time on the computer combining images in HDR.
